How to Make Your Infant Formula Even Better
By Todd N. Thompson MS, PT
Recently, it was discovered that breast fed babies are
developmental advanced to babies that are formula fed
(PEDIATRICS Vol. 101 No. 1 January 1998 ). This article,
entitled "Breastfeeding
and Later Cognitive and Academic Outcomes" by
Horwood and Fergusson (New Zealand), reported that in
an 18 year longitudinal study of over 1,000 children,
those who were breast fed as infants had both better
intelligence and greater academic achievement than those
who were infant formula fed children.
Breast fed babies are also less likely to get a
cold or flu, rarely get colic, and are more resistant
to skin irritations. The reason for this is simple - breast
milk contains important nutrients and co-factors not
present in infant formula.
The most crucial period for breast feeding your
infant is during the first 3-4 months. Mounting
evidence would suggest the first 9-12 months for optimal
health and cognitive development (PEDIATRICS Vol. 101 No.
1 January 1998). Some working mothers find it very
difficult to maintain a strict breast feeding schedule
while juggling their job responsibilities -- this was the
case for my wife Jodi. As stress mounts, breast milk
production decreases, and eventually formula feeding may
become necessary to meet the intake requirements of a
fast developing infant.
The composition of breast milk is very complex and
virtually impossible to duplicate. Infant formula
manufacturers do the best they can to make formula
nutritious, but they fall short in many ways. Fortifying
infant can be accomplished quite easily. Please remember,
however, that breast feeding is the best option for your
infant and should be continued as long as possible - 3-4
months minimum, 9-12 month optimum. The following is one
option for enhancing infant formula. Is this option
better than breast feeding - NO WAY!! It is better than
formula alone for those mothers who can not maintain the
breast feeding schedule, MOST DEFINITELY in our opinion!
Supplementing with superfoods is one option for
fortifying infant formula - and the results glow is the
eyes of Joshua Neal Thompson, our son.
Let us
teach you how to create the best infant formula possible,
using:
Spirulina Nanoclusters®
FirstFood™
- Colostrum
Eye-Q™
- DHA - Omega 3 essential fatty acid
Digestion-Formula
- Food enzymes
HydraCel®
Directions:
In a 2 lb. can of Enfamil powder (any powder formula will
do - they all require fortification to be of benefit to
your child) add 10 capsules of Spirulina
Nanoclusters® , 10 capsules of FirstFood™
- Colostrum, and 10 capsules of
Digestion-Formula . Once added, place lid back on container and
shake can vigorously for 5 minutes - to mix contents
thoroughly.
You may need to divide contents equally into separate
containers to achieve an even blend of nutrients. Yes, the
color of the powder formula will change from cream to a
very light shade of green.
Now you can prepare formula as usual. We use spring
water with
HydraCel® added, and once a day we squeeze one gel cap
of Eye-Q™
- DHA into his prepared formula bottle.
Joshua is exceptionally healthy, never
has colic, and has slept through the night since he was 3
months old. If you would like to speak with us about
